4 Winter Tips to Keep Your Heat Pump Working Efficiently

Updated: May 24, 2021

Get More Out of Your Heat Pump This Winter!

Especially on colder days, your heat pump works hard to provide additional heat to your home. There are some simple things you can do this winter to make sure your heat pump is working efficiently and save you money on your power bill.

1. Clean your filters monthly

Ensuring the filters inside your heat pump is clean and clear will help your heat pump work more efficiently and keep the internal components clean longer. Simply lift the cover of your indoor unit, remove the two filters, gently vacuum and rinse (can use mild soap as needed). Make sure they are dry before replacing them.

2. Keep your condenser clear of snow and ice

The snowy part of the winter is upon us in Nova Scotia. Next time you're out shovelling, make sure your heat pump condenser is clear of snow and ice build-up. The air intake needs to be clear for your heat pump to work efficiently.

3. Set it and forget it!

Heat pumps are not designed to work the same as electric baseboard heat. They don't perform well when the set temperature fluctuates. If you raise and lower the temperature by more than a degree or two, your heat pump may not be able to quickly make up the heat and your electric back up the heat will turn on – this will affect your power bill! Set your desired temperature and leave it.

4. Make sure your heat pump is clean

Over time, your heat pump collects dirt and dust from inside your home and begins to build upon the internal components. When the coil and fan have build-up on them, your heat pump won't work as efficiently – it will need to work harder to produce the desired temperature. This leads to a higher energy bill and unnecessary wear on your heat pump.
